Name: Sannomiya, Shiho (三宮紫穂)
Alias: Untouchable Empress (禁断の女帝)
Relationship Status: Single
Origin: Zettai Karen Children

Information:
Sannomiya Shiho is one of the most powerful espers in the world, whose “Psychometry” ability allows her to read the innermost thoughts, emotions, and histories of anything or anyone she touches. This allows her to accomplish feats at the peak of human ability, due to the fact that if she uses the tools of an expert she will match them accordingly, but utilizing anything by a rank amateur will produce similarly lesser results. As a member of the Japanese government organization B.A.B.E.L., Shiho fights as a member of “The Children” alongside her best friends Akashi Kaoru and Nogami Aoi, as well as her supervisor and caretaker Minamoto Kouichi, on whom she has a crush.

Fiercely loyal to Kaoru, Aoi, and Minamoto, she does everything in her power to protect them, though she is not above pulling pranks on them as well. Her abilities give her a unique perspective on the world, as her fount of knowledge and (transferred experience) makes her also especially fearful of things she cannot explain (particularly the supernatural), while her ability to sense emotions somewhat of a sadist; Shiho eats meat because she can sense the animals’ suffering through it.

Fujoshi Level:
Shiho is not a particularly strong fujoshi, and was only recently introduced to it by her classmate, fellow esper, enemy, and ally Patty Crew. While Shiho’s interest in yaoi was immediate, it appears tied to some degree to her sadistic enjoyment of extreme subjects. Shiho has read Hetalia.

UPDATE: The Angry Video Game Nerd made a cameo too! Thanks, VF5SS!

I tweeted about this as well, but I also want to leave a more permanent record of this rare occurrence.

Coincidence?

Edit: Actually with the way he’s wearing that tie, there’s no way that’s mere coincidence.

Name: Crew, Patty (パティ・クルー)
Alias: N/A
Relationship Status: Single
Origin: Zettai Karen Children

Information:
Patty Crew is a powerful esper capable of synthesizing a variety of psychic abilities to transform her body into a form of mist. Originally a mindless puppet controlled by the mysterious “Black Phantom” to act as an assassin, she was freed from her hypnotism through the efforts of the psychokinetic Akashi Kaoru and the members of the militant pro-esper organization known as P.A.N.D.RA. Since then, Patty has worked as a member of P.A.N.D.R.A., fighting against both Black Phantom and Kaoru’s own government esper organization, B.A.B.E.L. Patty has a particularly strong rivalry with Kaoru’s close friend and teammate, Sannomiya Shiho, though they manage to get along while attending the same middle school class at Shogakukan 6th Private Academy.

Patty’s fujoshi mindset takes a number of forms, including constant pairings of her male teammates (and their adversaries), bento lunches made to resemble attractive men, drawing, costume design, and an affinity for Akihabara and Ikebukuro. No records exist of Patty’s past prior to her possession by Black Phantom, so there is no evidence of her being a fujoshi prior to her joining P.A.N.D.RA. Given that all previous members of Black Phantom freed from hypnosis have turned out to be otaku in one way or another, the fact that Patty is a fujoshi may be a side effect of removing her brainwashing.

Fujoshi Level:
Patty is able to apply her fujoshi skills to a variety of tasks, being adept at the creative arts. In particular, she was able to create a full script for a school play through the use of her fujoshi imagination. On top of that, she once she used her psychic ability to spy on the boys in the hopes that something “interesting” might happen.

I think there’s more to the manga and anime series Zettai Karen Children than meets the eye, possibly some kind of elaborate conspiracy taking place over a period of years.

The series is about 3 young psychic girls defending the world alongside their adult caretaker (not pictured) Looking at the character designs, I think it’s undeniable that there is at least some lolicon appeal to these characters and that the creators are well aware of this element.

However, Zettai Karen Children does not run in some otaku-pandering magazine. It’s not like it’s from Comic High or Champion Red Ichigo or even Dengeki Daioh. ZKC runs in Shounen Sunday, the home of Detective Conan, Kekkaishi, Touch!, and Inuyasha. It’s meant to appeal to young boys first and foremost, though in a way different from Shounen Jump‘s more well-known approach of commercialized battling and the like.

Shounen Sunday has a well-established track record of introducing female characters who are on equal footing with their male counterparts with the goal of introducing the concept of males and females being equal to one another to children at an early age. There’s Ran in Detective Conan, Tokine in Kekkaishi, Minami in Touch!, and Kagome in Inuyasha. Having the main characters be the girls in ZKC means that the strength of females is readily apparent.

I have trouble thinking that Shounen Sunday would just let a series with lolicon elements run in its pages without some kind of ulterior motive to change or influence people, to just let it run to attract that older otaku audience.

As Zettai Karen Children has continued, the titular girls have aged. As of now, they are junior high age and their bodies have clearly matured. First, this implies that the progression of time is desired in the series, and second, that the girls are gradually moving away from being designed to have that very, very youthful appeal.

What I think they’re actually doing is an attempt to slowly create an  attraction to adult women in a group that might normally reject it otherwise. It’s using the power of the 2D complex to seize the hearts of otaku early on and then gradually wean them off of lolicon.

That’s Shounen Sunday, thinking long-term.
